azuritewings: (Zenlias)

Here's a small drabble I wrote about two of my D&D OCs, Zenlias and Rhydian, that I like enough to share.  I'm probably going to see about posting more about them since this is all in Zenlias' past and not in the current campaign.

------

"We're going to get in trouble," Zenlias warned as the two youths entered the abandoned building, the light from the moon and stars guiding them.

"Nonsense! You only get trouble if you get caught," Rhydian assured him and beckoned Zenlias further into the building. "Besides, I wanted to show you what I found." As Zenlias moved closer, Rhydian took his hand and they walked quietly through the derelict building. Rhydian walked with his head on a swivel as he looked this way and that to take in the fallen architecture. "Do you think this used to be important?" he whispered.

Before Zenlias could reply, a plank fell from the rafters causing him to jump. "I… I don't know, but this doesn't seem exactly safe."

Rhydian squeezed the Eladrin's hand reassuringly. "We're almost there," he said, pushing a tattered curtain beyond a broken window into the center courtyard. Even though the snow was still rather abundant, the remnants of overgrown plants could be seen clear as day under the moonlight.

And in the center stood a glorious fountain. Carved statues flanked the spout and despite the lack of water, it was still a sight to behold. Some remains of what once may have very well been golden flakes dusted the basin. Still holding tightly to the Fey's hand, Zenlias approached the fountain in awe. "This is…"

Rhydian grinned as he watched Zenlias. "Pretty, isn't it?"

Zenlias nodded. "It's a shame it doesn't work."

"Yeah, it doesn't. An' I don't know how to fix it. But actually, that's not why we're here."

"It's not?" Zenlias tilted his head.

"Nope!" Rhydian replied, emphasizing the 'p' with a pop. “It’s on the other side. See that corner?” He asked, pointing to the far side of the courtyard.

Zenlias squinted in the direction shown. “Yes?” It was still relatively dark so it was hard to make out, but he could see the overgrown plants had taken over the corner.

“C’mon.” Rhydian gave the Eladrin’s hand an enthusiastic squeeze before leading him once more. They walked carefully as the dead plants covered and hid the various chunks of rubble the building had left behind. The crunch of the snow underfoot mixed with the moonlight brought a smile to Rhydian’s face as they approached the corner. He let go of Zenlias’ hand and brushed off some of the leaves and plant remains off of a bench. “My dear Lord Zen,” he said with an over-the-top bow, gesturing to the bench.

Zenlias laughed and bowed in return with the same flourish. “Thank you, my dear Ofelmë.” He sat on the bench, hands at either side of himself.

“Hey, how come I don’t get a Lord title?” Rhydian pouted.

Zenlias smiled softly. “Because Ofelmë is a better title, in my opinion.”

Rhydian was grateful that it was still fairly dark as it was dark enough to hide his blush. “A-anyway,” he continued, “It’s here.” He knelt down behind the bench before saying, “Close your eyes.”

“You’re not going to startle me, are you?”

“That was one time and I apologized, didn’t I?”

Zenlias sighed and shut his eyes. “Fine, fine. Eyes closed.”

Rhydian sat up on his haunches and waved a hand in front of Zenlias’ face, making sure he couldn’t see, before leaning back down. He dug around in the snow to uncover his prize and pulled it up, careful not to disturb the others. The Fey hopped onto the bench, his surprise covered in his hands and said, “Hands up and open. Palms flat.”

Doing as he was told, Zenlias still had to ask, “It’s not gross, is it? Or alive?”

“Nah, not this time,” Rhydian assured him and placed something in the Eladrin’s hands.

It was soft and if he wasn’t Winterkin, the snow would’ve felt too cold. “Is this… dirt?”

“A little bit! Open your eyes.”

Zenlias opened his eyes slowly and in his palms rested a single stalk of small golden flowers. "Mallos…" he said in awe. "How did you--?"

"Exploring during the day, I found it. I know you like flowers and it's kinda rare, so I wanted to show you." Rhydian took the stalk between his fingers and carefully tucked Zenlias' hair behind his ear to place the flowers. He smiled. "It suits you."

Zenlias couldn't help the flush on his cheeks and looked away. "Idiot…" he mumbled.

"Hey, that's not a very nice thing to say to someone who just gave you a present!" Rhydian playfully huffed.

Zenlias laughed and turned back to Rhydian with a gentle smile. "I love it, Ofelmë."

Rhydian smiled softly, a small dreamy sigh escaping his lips. That damn laugh and smile would be the death of him.
